Debbie August 08, 2011 Tips and How To's

There are lots of opportunities to use CheckInOn.Me. Mostly, we think that it's best to use when you don't feel totally safe. Here are some examples:

  • Online dating.
  • You bought or sold something through Craigslist or eBay, and now you're meeting to exchange the item and money.
  • You're away from home, travelling for business or taking your vacation.
  • High school and college kids doing more on their own, but not wanting to report so much to Mommy and Daddy. :)
  • Any time you are walking or taking public transportation at very early or late hours.
  • You live alone, and if you weren't OK, people may not know for hours.
  • Those with illness, but feel a little self conscious about family checking in on them constantly.
  • You have a job that brings you to unknown neighborhoods, or around a lot of strangers, such as:
    • Taxi driver, limo driver, or chauffeur.
    • Food or package delivery person.
    • Temp worker such as an admin assistant, translator, or sign language interpreter.
    • Realtor, real estate agent, rental agent, or property manager.
    • Insurance adjuster.
    • Public speaker.
    • Massage therapist, makeup artist, or other job where clients come to your home or you go to theirs.
    • Counselor, therapist, or social worker.
    • Flight attendant, pilot, or tour guide.

These are some examples. We know that the more you use CheckInOn.Me, the more reasons you'll find to use it. Please contact us to let us know how you use CheckInOn.Me!

Debbie August 07, 2011 Tips and How To's

The best advice for how to be safer is to go with your gut. If something doesn't seem right, listen to your instincts. You don't have to say yes to everything. It's OK to say no. It's OK to walk away, end a date, not let someone in your house, etc...

Our blog has new articles all the time on a variety of safety issues. It's a great resource! We'll be relaunching it later in 2012.

Debbie August 07, 2011 Tips and How To's

If you miss a Check, we might think you are in trouble, and alert your friends. Here are some tips for not missing Checks.

  • Charge that battery up! No matter what you're doing, it's important to have a working phone!
  • Get spare batteries for your phone. Many phones can take spare batteries. Sorry, but you can't open an iPhone and change the battery. You can even get spares cheaply on eBay. Keep those charged up, carry them with you, and swap them out when your phone is dying.
  • Keep the phone on your person. A phone in your car or a phone lost at the bottom of a pocketbook helps nobody.
  • Keep the sound on so you can hear it. If you're in a movie, concert, or other event that asks phones to be silent, keep the vibration on so you can feel the phone go off.
  • Turn down your screen brightness. A darker screen will help save battery. And only use the phone when you need to. The more that screen is on, the more you burn the battery.
  • Only run the things you really need on your phone. Turn off Facebook, Twitter, frequent weather updates, or anything else that might burn your battery.
  • Think about when the Checks might be coming, and try to be aware of your phone around that time.
  • Consider only going to places that have good service for your carrier. You may not want to go on that date out in the desert... or skydiving... if you know your phone may not have any signal.

Your safety is more important than ANYTHING! Make choices that help you stay safe.

Debbie August 07, 2011 Tips and How To's

Never. If our system thinks you might be in trouble, we only reach out to any friends and family you have confirmed in our system.

We never alert any authorities because we have no way to know if you are really in trouble, or what kind of trouble that is. It's hard for us to know if you didn't respond to our Check because you're in trouble, or because you went into a movie and turned your phone off (don't do that! Set it on vibrate!).

We do not want to bog local police departments down with false reports, so we leave it to your friends to determine if there is a real emergency or not. We might also not have your exact location, and we wouldn't want to call the wrong department.
